We have developed an optimal artificial diet for Daphnis nerii larvae. It works at 100%.

We have also developed ideal diet for Acherontia atropos and Bunea alcinoe.

The diet for Acherontia atropos also works for Acherontia lachesis.

Hi Serge,
Do you know if caterpillars reared on artificial food produce healthy adults?
And are they of normal colour?
Regards, Klaas

Larvae reared on this diet produce healthy fertile adults of normal size and color. We have already got 7 generations of Acherontia atropos on such diet.

Each larva of A.atropos caterpillar eats up approx. 40 g of artificial diet and grows up to 20 g. Time of development is 17-18 days at 26 degrees.

Yes, I meant the substance what they eat. I thought it was bread, but I'm sure that it isn't bread! :D

Serge, are there any differences between art. food for e.g. atropos and nerii? Recently I came across such a recipe. If any divergences occur, is this a matter of different ingredients or only their ratio??
I met with such a recipe:
- bean flour
- yeast
- vit. C
- cholesterol
- sorbitol acid
- streptomycin
- formalin
- lettuce sprouts oil (tocopherol - vit. E?)
- agar
- water
Serge could you tell sth more about yours??

I can't tell more right now as we prepare a scientific article. I can only tell that nerii diet must contain food plant. Now we use Vinca minor.

Does it works for Actias luna, when you use liquidambar in the ingredients, and than keep that for the winter?

I didn't try to keep luna on this diet, but Actias selene started to eat rapidly. The diet contained dried betula leaves. Also, this diet can be used for Samia ricini, Caligula simla and some other species in different modifications.
