mfg

Hi Breeders,

i want to breed some nice tropical butterflys this year again and i´am focused on some papilio species native to the equator.can some of you give any advice in temperature ressistance of tropical butterflys?i want to breed in my greenhouse again.the last years i started in may because i wanted to be sure that the temperatures are ok to breed.but maybe i can start earlier.do you have hints for me?when do you start to breed without any supplements of heating?

best regards

Here in holland we got something called 'de eisheiligen' what means icemighty or something like that..

This is on 15 may, after that day, i actually start breeding p. demoleus and that kind of tropicals.

You might take larva inside..

Ah, that's nice..

Uhm, last year i started with papilio polytes, the night temperature was 6 degrees, at lowest.

But, larva are better be kept higher, butterflies do well at 6 degrees at night, but just need a higher temp duren the light hours.

Larva will also grow to slow, andd that could even take 2 or 3 months/

So, just buy a min/max temperature meter, and when the average temp is above 8 it is ok, but not many lower.

So deptpoint 6, average 8 degrees.

What do you want to breed?

Hi Rob,

thank you very much, glad even one person answers me.

from al butterflys i have ever kept papilio polytes and papilio demoleus have made the most fun while breeding.they hatch very good, get in copula by themselfs and also lay their eggs without problems.so i think about order them again, additional maybe some papilio rumanzovia or something like that.if i can get my hands on asclepias i would also try danaus again,i once bred chrysippus but the caterpillars didn´t pupate well(they start to pupate in fall, maybe low temperatures are the reason why they dont succeed?)

in dependence on price i may also get some eyecatchers, even if i cant breed them.papilio palinurus looks nice, but did not done well, their flight is to aggressiv for the greenhouse and they damage their wings in short time.

what are you going to breed?

Always good to speak persons who have the same 'butterfly species' hobby as you:)

If you want, i can send some Gomphocarpus seeds to you, have got enought here, planning for danaus this year!

I want to try Rumanzovia, Bianor, Polyxenes and Lowii this year, and some Graphium Dosom, if i can get some of those.

The pupation, if it want on in the greenhouse was definately bacuase of the cold.

You should get larva above 4th instar inside, and get them there actual conditions.

I had a couple of monarchs last year, but they did not lay anye ggs at all, and they were mating like every day.

So yeah, maybe we could exchange some stuff, later this year!
