Hello everyone,
I have a box full of S. pavonia/pavoniella hybrid cocoons and am looking to sex them. I feel that doing so by eye may be too inaccurate, as some of the cocoons are between sizes.
Could anyone please advise on how to sex them more accurately, e.g. by weight?

I think, that you will have to take the pupae out of the cocoons to check their sex and it is better to do that after overwintering.
My preferred method is to weigh them with a digital scale, males will typically be lighter than females, of course, you need to keep track of
the weights of each cocoon, and if that's the box(pictured) you have to work with, that might be time consuming. I sometimes use some label attached to the cocoon, or as with pupa, wrap it in paper towel, and I write on that.
I don't like to open cocoons, it's not always simple. I doubt there is any way to tell by sight alone. When I have opened cocoons, it has always been
stressful to me, I'll use a scissors or a razor blade, or both, and a lot can go wrong with either.

ich habe als Kind jahrelang S. pavonia gezüchtet und mir fallen noch zwei Dinge ein:
- Die Reuse der Männcjen ist schlanker als die der Weibchen und geht gerader in den Kokonbauch über.
- Man kann die Kokons auch durchleuchten, wenn man sie gegen das Licht hält. Die männliche Puppe ist schlanker, die weibliche hat eine deutlich bauchigere "Hüfte".
Vielleicht kannst Du ja mehrere der vorgeschlagenen Methoden anwenden: Erst wiegen und die eindeutigen sortieren und die zweifelhaften nochmal durchleuchten usw.

Ich habe die ca. 135 Kokons nun alle abgewogen und die Daten in eine Tabelle eingetragen um zu schauen, wo die Trennung zwischen Männchen und Weibchen liegt. Natürlich kann ich daran jetzt nicht zu 100% das Geschlecht bestimmen, aber interessant ist es dennoch (x-Achse: Gewicht in Gramm, y-Achse: Anzahl Kokons)...

Der Sohn JOHANNES meines Freundes Ulf EITSCHBERGER hat schon vor längerer Zeit eine
Arbeit über die Zucht dieses Tier geschrieben, bei der er soweit erinnerlich sogar die Kotmenge ....u.a.
genau abgewogen hat. Denke dass Ulf diese Arbeit noch hat.
