I raised mine on spruce and fir. They took them equally. I did open the box for a few hours each day and changed the substrate and food plants every 3 days.

Spray the substrate only, not the larva or food plant. Keep in a closed box. I was fortunate to get 12 of 15 through. Just waiting for cocoon emergences now.
