Hello Michael. Indeed, interesting discussion! Me too is inclined to think that it is Melampus on your photo. The authors above argumentated their POV very well. I have series of Melampus from several localities in Switzerland and N. Italy. Specimens are variable in a width of the rufous band and the number of the black dots ('ocelli') on the FW & HW.

Hello,
Today I've been in the forest. Have took a photo of this nice critter.
Location: SE. European Russia, Saratov Region.
Biotope: mixed deciduous forest, (with Oaks (Quercus) and Birches (Betula) as co-dominants).
Size: ca. 3cm.
I guess it could be some Lymantriidae or Arctiidae...
