Question for those who have observed successful copulations in Automeris: Last evening (9 January) at 5:30 pm an Automeris belti female (Ecuador) eclosed in a popup cage where a male was present which had eclosed the previous day. By 6:15 pm they were in copula. Then by 8:00 pm copulation had terminated. I was hoping for egg by morning of 10 January (today) but there were no eggs. What is the usual successful copulation time in this genus? When should egg laying begin following a successful copulation?

During last 5 days six Automeris belti zaruma males (Ecuador) have eclosed. There are 4 male and 5 female pupae left and I am hoping for a copulation and eventual eggs. I presently have 3 live males under light while hoping for female soon. Which is best to hold live males while waiting for female: leaving under light at room temperature or placing in the refrigerator crisper. Which keeps males alive and healthy the best for a later successful copulation?

Thank you Michael and Frank for the suggestion  . Insect design please do as I have learned - mist them at least 2 times a day. Like Robin told me this species may go for 2 maybe even 3 days before starting to eat. Just be patient. Mine are now starting to eat the Rose leaves  . Some nibbling still visible on the Prunus lucitanica. Fingers crossed.

    • Hi everyone. I just now (22 Dec.) received a large number of Bunaea alcinoe chrysalides from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. This is my first experience with this species. For those of you who have good experience in rearing and breeding this species what have you found is the best way to store these chrysalides? Will they go into diapause if I keep them cool, ca.10 degrees C, so that I can have them eclose later this Spring or Summer when host plants will be available? Or, if this is not possible with this species what should I do now to get eclosion in the next month or so? Thank you for your assistance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!! Wayne
