maybe cut the leaves so they can smell the foodplants, that's what I did with eucalyptus and they only ate the cut leaves. maybe that is worth a try

I tried eucalyptus with no problems though.

I was originally from Hong Kong and moved to England but I wasn't quite fitting in the place, lifestyle, temperature, school problems on making friends etc. I wasn't too happy back then. until I found the butterfly/moth breeding hobby. It made me make more friends and cheer me up. The hobby actually helped me through the sad times in adapting to a new country. I originally breed beetles but I came across someone selling some eri silkmoth (samia ricini) larva, so I decided to try some. I loved when they came out so I started to get into the butterfly/moth hobby. I think my second moth species I raised is poplar hawks (loathoe populi) as I found a wild female individual. I learned there is actually much deeper stuff about moths. I learned a lot of other stuff like identification of trees and shrubs for the larva; geography, as I always look at maps and stuff to see where my favorite moths and butterflies originated and habitats on where to find them; it made me more out going and willing to go to different places to find them. I pin my butterflies/moths after they naturally died since I can't get the courage to kill them myself. I collect them as they remind me of what I successfully raised. I actually want to be a photographer since I can take great pictures of what I raised and not needing to kill them. I hope this information helps you.
