Dear friends, I'm looking for GPS locations / labels of Copaxa sapatoza and C. semioculata (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) specimens for a research study here in Colombia. The objective is to model the ecological niche of these species. Any help with getting this data would be very appreciated. Labels stating "Villavicencio, Colombia", or "Melgar", or "Villapinzón" might as well be useful. Please forward this message to collection curators if you're in touch with institutions.

Thanks for your help!

Dear colleagues,

I've just added the Entomodena event to the Calendar here on Actias. (event id 327).

In my experience, pairing of Actias dubernardi always happen late at night. You should check them early in the morning - you should find the couple still together or separated but still close together. My friend Alan Marson suggests to check them at about 3 AM because pairing could happen and then the male flies away and you won't know it happened till the eggs hatch! It's almost the same with Actias maenas. Still, Actias sinensis behaviour is very different and pairing is very brief; lunas and selenes pairings can be easily checked late next morning.

Hope this helps

Lorenzo

I had the same trouble with Actias luna back in 2009.
However, like Johannes said, although some larvas had black dots on their bodies, they all thrived and the moths emerged without any problem. I don't know what these black dots mean, but I found they're common in Actias species.

My suggestion is to give this plant a try: Shorea glauca (Dipterocarpaceae)

Ligustrum vulgare is evergreen, at least here in Italy.

No, this is Thauria aliris.

This is true: for example Antheraea pernyi grow much more in summer when you can rear the larvae on Quercus robur, while in winter you have to breed them on Quercus ilex.

No. It's a Nymphalidae.

No, it is not a Saturniidae

So let's see if someone can identify this - I don't think it's difficult:

this is U. l.

Urania leilus?

Also Eucalyptus rotundifolia works with Lobobunaea goodii, Lobobunaea phaedusa.

Is it Urania fulgens?

Yes, of course it is not needed.

Sometimes switching foodplant is needed because of some problems related to a specifical plant. For example, as you could see in the discussion "samias died", I told you that I had some troubles with Prunus laurocerasus so I switched to Ligustrum. Some breeders state that it is better to switch during the L3, when switching foodplant is not too difficult. Also if you notice that you don't have enough food to rear larvae on the same plant, you could try to switch to another known foodplant of the species.

hello

L is the skin changes, right? is the 1st sheds its skin, then is L1
I do not know if this is the right place to put the development, but I do not need to open a new topic

Thanks

Hi

L means instar, so you have to add 1 to the count of the skin changes.
L1 is ex-ovo instar, so L2 is the instar after the first moult.

Hello,

that's because some other Eucalyptus species were tried to rear - in particular the Argema species - Saturniidae, but only Eucalyptus gunnii worked well with many Saturniid.
Also Eucalyptus citriodora is a known foodplant of Nudaurelia krucki, but I don't know if this can be used as foodplant of other Saturniidae species.
Mario Ioppolo is actually breeding Argema mittrei on Eucalyptus calmadulensis with good results.

Lorenzo

It is known that with Eucalyptus gunnii you can breed many species of Saturniidae such as Argema mittrei, Argema mimosae, Antheraea mylitta, Gonimbrasia belina

The most useful Eucalyptus species to use for breeding purpose is Eucalyptus gunnii.
