Hi, I had 8 pairings of Papilio bianor X Papilio machaon syriacus
    See picture.
They started to lay ova at the moment.

I hope the ova will be fertilised.
Does anybody know what the results can be?
Does anyone have such hybrids in his collection.
    Please sent a picture.

    Thanks

    Dear Rik,

one never should say "never" beforehand, but most probably the successful (mechanical) pairing of male and female belonging to two very different species groups is most unlikely to lead to success (offspring). The reasons can be multifold:
    (a) The genetic factors in the cell plasma are not compatible (DNA of the mitochondria) if the species are too different.
    (b) the number of chromosomes of the two species may be different, i.e. during the pairing of homologous chromosomes in the meiotic process there remain some "leftovers" (some chromosomes will have no partners) and a surviving organism cannot be formed.

There are probably more reasons why it will not work.
    Sorry for the bad news.

    Best regards,

    Michael
