Hello, i've got my Papilio machaon in my greenhouse.
But, the male is doing strange last days.
There is a female in the greenhouse too, and when she is eating he's going to fly around her, than she moves her wings just like she is flying, but she stays on the flower, pushes her body up, and walks little rounds on the flowers ( Lantana ).
I though this was a matingsdance or so.. But when the male starts to fly around her he makes big circles around her, and evru time he comes closer, i was think, when he was really close that he would mate her, but that he starts to eat...

    What is it?

No, she is not to old.

The female is actually never to old, the male also.
The best thing is to let the man and female eat a lot, so there body gets fat.
After 4 days, the man is ready to pair, than handpair, and wait for eggs.

    Good luck

I don't think the female will call males.
For so far I know, only not-eating species do that, because they don't have any time and energy to search mates.
This specie does feeds itselves, so she would have enought time to find a male, or the male find her.
What you can do is, a light trap, males often come to this, be ready with a net, and catch him.
Than putt them together in a cage, and hope..

    Succes!

    Hi merlin
I did an experiment some weeks ago.
I took some l4 caterpillars, and puttet them in a sleeve cage in my hegde of ligustrum.
They eated nice, with temps of 5 degrees at night, and even rain.
They all survived it, and are now pupae.
So, 10-12 degrees is no problem..

ps: i finally got the eggs:P

Hi, I handpared some actias selene a time ago.
They got stuck, even for 5 hours, but the female was not fecundated, i tried it again, this time at 02:00 at night.
I thought, maybe this works.. same story they got stuck and paired untill 08:00 in morning.
    What went wrong?
Maybe, i putted the man at the wrong place..

    Hello, im going to breed butterfly's in my greenhouse. ( l 2,80m high, 1,8 b 1,7
I now got all the windows in, and the widows on the sides i putted netting on.
Now, in shops you can't buy plant like lantanas yet but my machaon pupae are going to hatch very soon.

Can you give me some advice about:
    - tips for breeding
    - tips for plants

It would be nice to hear experiences with foto's of greenhouses to get a better idea

I think thats possible, the eggs do overwinter right?
The only problem is that you cant let the eggs overwinter for atleast 3 months.
The best solution would be that you let the female lay here eggs, and after that put them in the fridge at 8 degrees.
After 2 weeks you could go some colder (5 degrees). Take them out in June and you will have caterpillars.

    Greetings
