I bought 30 eggs 4 weeks ago. I had about 25 caterpillars. Now I have 4 living caterpillars. Most small caterpillars have died. I kept them in for the first 2 weeks and then moved outside. What could be the cause? They eat fennel. If there are still eggs from the papilio machaon for sale I would love to hear. Greetings Kevin Dua

Hi Kevin,
without knowing any details on the way you kept those caterpillars, it is not possible to speculate about the reasons for the failure. A general reason for unsuccessful breeding is the inadequate 'housing' of the caterpillars,i.e., too much humidity, too little aeration, too little attention on the hygiene of the boxes (development of detrimental fungi), and wet food plants which cause deadly diarrhea.

Best way with machaon its always to keep them outside at possible ! Start them in box with some plant in water ( well ventilated) already outside and in L3 put them outside under sleeve and let the nature Make the rest ! No decease, no maladie, big imago !
