Macroglossum stellatarum is naturally attracted to blue/violet or lilac flowers. It is an inborn behavior of this species, to search for blue/violet/lilac flowers first. But M. stellatarum has the ability to learn and will prefer flowers of other colors if these provide better food. Most diurnal moths and butterlies are most attracted to blue/violet/lilac flowers. But I have read in a special work about M.stellatarum and its ability to learn that it is the inborn behavior of this species to prefer blue/violet/lilac flowers. A pitty I can't remember where I've read it, but the article was in German, anyway.
