Maybe they're just not strong enough. Keep the healthier caterpillars and the weaker ones separeted form each other. Also, keep cleaning your container or box every day and keep your Ligustrum leaves fresh...

When I was growing Samia cynthia I also got some caterpillars which were weaker, I did keep them seperated (so, the weaker ones and the stronger ones) The 4 seperated weaker ones did die, but the other healthier ones just stay alive and after a time I got cocoons...

Also, Samia caterpillars are living and eating in a group, when a caterpillar is "lost" (that meens: when he is out of the group) He'll stop eating and as you could understand the catterpillar will die.... So, you can make groups but be always carefull that you have more than 1 caterpillar seperated...

L means instar, so you have to add 1 to the count of the skin changes.
L1 is ex-ovo instar, so L2 is the instar after the first moult.
