Sexes >Warum welches geschlacht??

    Hallo Leute.

I found it very interesting why my pupae of Acherontia atropos devellop in male or female form!!!

I have used several smaller and bigger boxes to pupate.
    In small boxes> 20-20, 7 cm sand: 3-4 L5 larva
    >>> Even spread off male /female. Nothing strange here.

    Second box:
    Blue plastic, 30-50- 20cm sand: 24 L5
    >>>> 6 were male. ALL others Female.

Is it possible that temp has an effect, or depth in sand? or any thing??
At least it is strange because normally females are ''always'' in lesser quantity.

    Hope to learn ,

No. An effect of temperature -if there is any- had to act upon the caterpillars all over or, at least, major parts of the larval stage.

In a grown up caterpillar, sex is already defined, which means that the gonads, male or female genitals, are already visible, at least if you examine the caterpillar with scalpel and binocular. In some species they even appear below the larval cuticula, so that you don't have to dissect them.

The uneven distribution of the sexes in your case occured just by chance.

I hope, I could help you a little bit.

    Greets!
