Not really sure what's wrong

    Heya all,

My caterpillars aren't feeling well. They keep turning over I made a short video because it's easier to see then to explain. Video
Anyone knows why they behave like this? Are they sick? Did I do something wrong?

    Thank you in advance!

    Cheers,
    Lifey

Saturnia Pyri. I have removed the unhealty looking caterpillars to another location so the healty once aren't getting infected
I don't understand how they got sick I have removed the old leaves and feces everyday.

Is the hostplant a safe one? ( did u use it before on catties without losses?)
When it's a new plant it also can be treated with insecticides or fertilizers.

You also should put the healthy ones in a fresh clean box on fresh food to prevent spreading in case of infection,
and make sure they get ventilated very well.

I hope the still ok ones are gonna stay healthy and grow big!

Yes all the plants are from my garden so they should be safe normally. My Brahmaea and Bombyx don't seem to be sick but some Samia Ricini caterpillars got the same symptoms.
I've put the healthy ones in a fresh box with fresh leaves so let's hope they'll be ok

Let's hope the healthy ones stay healthy

    Hello,

the video quality is not the best, but I do not think they are sick; they look a little bit like caterpillars in a molting phase. If I'm right they turn around because they can't find any hold!

Please check the head and if I'm right put them on a piece of paper towel. Some caterpillars are able to grab this material in this phase.

Do you pull them off when you change the food?

Please reply, because if I'm right it's not too late.

PS: Do you just put the leafes on the ground?

Oh dear, lets hope it does not get worse and spread even more.
So it's dry skin season for you - you should wash you hands very regularely, also when going from one cage/box to another.
Hope you will have some luck!

I thought about that too, just dismissed it because they are all different sizes and look dry.
That would be the best case though!

It looks like one L1 and five L2s.

Wietse, you can use every material with a rough, but fine surface. A fuzzy piece of cotton cloth is also possible.

We need to take a closer look at the head. Maybe you can post a photo?

I've tried but I still think it's an infection. Most of the caterpillars have already died. They haven't shed recently so I don't think that's the case especially because there so many of them and it occured in two diffrent boxes at the same time. I've put them in quarentine, washed my hands and all the materials I used. Let's hope it this thing doens't make more casualties.

It`s a really sad day today  I`m going to make sure that the others don`t get infected
