Dear Colegues
Two weeks ago I have captured females of Lemonia balcanica so I have some eggs for next year rearing. I know that there are some problems with pupating and especially with hatching. Could you please hepl me and tell me how you get them to pupate and to hatch good adults? Thanks very much for any advice and help!

    Hi Martin,

a couple years ago i have been breed Lemonia balcanica.
This breeding is very similar like Lemonia dumi.

The caterpillars eats Taraxacum very well, and the upbringing to the pupae are more or less easy and without loss.

More problems are the pupea phase: i think the same touchy points as by Lemonia dumi: to find the right balance of Humidity (not to much!) and to avoid disruption/succussion.
Breeding in plastic boxes, paper towel on the bottom, Taraxacum outrival with root and direct put in the box without large cleaning.
Also the boxes not to often cleaning.
Pupation in moderate and loose soil.
Eclosion of the adults after 3-4 months.

    Good luck! :daumenja:

If you are successful with this breeding, or you have a couple off eggs "remain" i'm verry interested to breed this species as well.

    best regards,
    Max

    Hi Max
Thanks very much for information. I know that breeding of larva is Quite easy. I dont know how to make them pupate. If using of separate plastic boxes with soil and put each larva into one box to let her pupate and leave this until hatching or release them into big outdoor cage and let them pupate under natural conditions. How did you pupate them exactly?
Thanks very much! If Iam succesful I can send you some eggs, but please give me your email so I can put you to my address book.
    Thanks Martin

    Hi Martin,

    You're welcome.
If you have enough place and boxes, i would say this is a good procedure for pupate: each larvae in a separate box with soil.
So the larves doesn't disturb each others and will have calm for pupate.

I had not a lot of larvaes so i put all together into one big plastic box with about 10cm layer of soil.
Are the climatic terms on your domicile more or less the same as on the found place of this species i would keep the pupaes under natural conditions.

To let the pupae in the soil or to excavate it is another question: i would split it, on part let in the soil and the second part excavate careful and keep the pupaes in little scrapes on the soil and capped with fresh moss. So i did it also by L. dumi and received fine adultes.

It's always a challenge with the pupae phase of this species!

Otherwise if you will have enough larvaes you can do it a third part and to let it in a big and save outdoor cage.

    Good luck!

My email you already have from the order of Lemonia taraxaci eggs :daumenja:

    best regards,
    Max

OK thanks Max! I will try half in separate boxes and half in big outdoor cage. Both will be left under natural conditions, which in my country are only a bit colder and more wet as in Bulgaria does not rain for 3 moths in summer.
    Thanks again!
P.s. I dont have your email, but here is mine: martin.jagelka@gmail.com
