Can someone please tell me if this pupae is alive?

    Hi Actias Members,

I’ve recently obtained a package of Vanessa Atalanta pupae. Unfortunately, 1 died in transit. 1 hatched a few days ago which was good news. I have one left but it isn’t hatching. It’s not firm like it’s dried out. I can’t tell if it is alive. If someone has any info, it would be appreciated!

    Regards,

    Ethan

I can't tell you that just from the description. I'd have to feel that myself. The movability and the weight of the pupa can tell you a lot about its state. If the segments are completely locked in place and are unmovable, the pupa is dried out and dead. If they move without much resistance and the pupa feels slushy, then the pupa is probably dead as well. But, this can indicate that the pupa is close to hatching as well so be careful. In this case though, you should be able to see the wings through and a notable softening of the usually rigid "shell". If you say it is not firm or stiff and the segments are movable like they should be, then it sounds good for now. You always, always should keep pupae that seem dead and wait for a reasonable long time until you can safely conclude that it is in fact dead. I had it happen to me so many times that pupae I thought were dead still hatched. It doesn't hurt you to just wait and see what happens. There is nothing else you can do anyway.

Hasn't anything to do with this topic, but you might want to read the first post of this thread Notation of scientific names

    Greetings Dennis

    Hey, thanks for the answer.

I’ll try with the feeling. It’s definitely not hard but maybe it is to soft. I think it should’ve hatched by now.

I didn’t even notice about the capitalization. My device auto corrected to be capitalized.

    Thanks!
