2 questions on Pieris spp.

    Hello/ Hallo everyone!

    Here are my 2 questions-

I have about 5 adults of Pieris rapae. 2 females and 3 males. I have a large cage with plenty of light. I also have cabbage leaves hooked to a stick. I have been trying to hand pair them and doing it naturally but they won’t seem to pair. Is there anything I can do?

2nd Question- I have had 2 Pieris brassicae chrysalis since November. I lost most of them over the winter but I have 2 left. Is this normal? If it is, when can I expect them to hatch?

    Thanks!

    Danke!

    Hello Eaton,

    P. rapae will pair naturally. Perhaps they will have allready done. If the females reject the males, they have been mated and antiaphrodisaic has been transferred.

Handpairing is not as easy as with Swallowtails.

    Good luck, Merlin

    Hi Merlin!

How long do your Pieris rapae usually live? Mine seem to only live about a week and it’s hard to get them to lay eggs. I bought some wild broccoli and cabbage. Any idea on the pupae?

    Best Regards,

    Ethan

    Hi Ethan,

    P. rapae flies 7 to 10 days. The eggs and small cats are very hard to find. I would recommend living potted plants. So you don't have to find them until they are grown up. You may try Sinapis alba ("Gelbsenf", yellow mustard) which is used as organic fertilizer. The Whites use it for nectar and for ovipositing. You can get it in garden centers or online.

The time of eclosion of P. brassicae depends on where you live (day-time length and temperatur). Hibernation in P. brassicae can be suppressed with a day-time length of 16 hours and 18 to 20*C. (In biological pest control P. brassicae is used to breed e.g. tachynid flies year round.) Your male will eclose a week or so earlier. So you will have to keep him fresh, while he's waiting for her. Women....

    Good luck,

    Merlin

    Thanks Merlin.

Is there any Pieris species that can breed with each other. Is it the claspers that do not allow them to breed?

See, here in the US in the late summer when adults are often mixed, 2 pierid species Colias philodice and eurytheme breed with with each other. But, I guess they are 2 very different species.

I’ve had the P. brassicae chrysalis since November. I want them to hatch but they don’t seem to change.
