Iphiclides podalirius chrysalis

    Greetings all,

Recently, I received some Iphiclides podalirius pupae and I hung them up. I glued them to a paper towel. However, some of the pupae are extremely active. One pupae wriggled loose from the paper towel. The pupae even wriggled off my desk! Does anyone have any answers for why this happened and anyway I can set the pupae so it doesn’t have to hang?

    Thanks,

    Ethan

    Hello Ethan,

But you already know that the pupae of Iphiclides podalirius are not hung up? They are fastened head upside, with a belt like P. machaon.

I always made a kind of sleeping bag with toilet paper for such pupae. Totally simple and can be used multiple times. Simply close it with two staples as shown. You can then easily attach the whole thing anywhere and the pupae can wiggle around without falling off.

    Hope that helps...

    Greetings Sandra

    Hello!

Thanks for your answer. I hung them up by glue like they would hang in the wild. They aren’t dangling upside down like a Nymphalid. I’ll try the “sleeping bag” idea for the really active ones.

Is there any reason for their activity?

    Thanks!
