Greetings from spring in Norway....and season start.
Three years ago I bred some larvae from imported Graellsia isabellae eggs,
but managed only to get two cocoons out of the 20. Probably because I sleeved them outside
and it was a much too cool and rainy summer.
Anyway, by chance they, the next spring, turned out to be one male and one female, eclosing with only one day apart (male kept overnight in the fridge). And to my great luck and happiness, they paired the first night…resulting in multiple eggs ![]()
Unfortunately, I tried to raise them on potted small pinetrees, which, to make a long story short, turned out not to be the best thing to do. In the end I lost them all.
Later I was advised by a professional breeder, who sent me 15 eggs last year, to raise isabellae only in plastic containers. So I did….and successfully ended up with 15 cocoons.
Happy was I.
Brought them inside, from overwintering in my unheated garage, March 23…and the first ones eclosed April 11 (after 19 days); males and a female.
Up until yesterday 9 isabellaeas had emerged.
So, even though I know that natural pairing of this species is not the easiest (difficulty rendered to 8,5 out of 10), I felt confident, because of my luck with the single pair in 2023,
that I should be able to obtain at least one pairing when now having several fresh males and females.
BUT, now after three nights, none of the have been willing
I provided a room in my home, keeping temperature around 15 to 18+ C
and ventilated with a slightly opened window. Last night, three females in three different mesh cages, both big and smaller, had the males introduced at dusk.
But all just fluttered around…..seemingly not having any interest at all…..just disturbing the females which also took to the wings.
I could follow them through the night on my trailcam, monitoring them by taking a new photo every 10 minutes.
So very disappointed so far and feeling now little hope of achieving a natural pairing ![]()
Last chance is to try handpairing. I have read that this is also difficult with isabellae, but gives a better chance of success than natural pairing.
Will try tonight; two new males eclosed this morning and I have a good female from yesterday and two from 2 to 3 days ago.
So I have a couple of questions that hopefully maybe some of you, with experience with this species, can give me some advice on…..so I know what to expect.
I have googled and read what I could find on the subject, but perhaps you have some extra small tips and knowledge ?
Should handpairing only be done in the dark?
Should I only use fresh butterflies, newly eclosed….or will 2-3 days old do?
How long time maximum you think I should try each pair, before realizing they will not attach to each other?
I see professional breeders supply eggs of isabellae each year. So wonder if they manage this by handpairing…..as natural pairings are so difficult to achieve?
Thankful for any advice.
