Hello Everyone,
just a little story about breeding the Ornithoptera Priamus. This species is listed as CITES 2 but this is unnecessary because this species is very easy to rear. Within 3-4 weeks you have a huge caterpillar! See the attached photo's of mine Priamus Larvae in L5 stage.
The female lays there eggs on every Aristolochia Spp. The food I used for breeding them is Aristolochia Grandiflora, Aristolochia Clematitis and Aristolichia Durior( Macrophylla).
I'm asking around for artificial food so rearing them in wintertime is also possible. I have a few aristolochia Tagala plants in a huge greenhouse. Sorry not for buying. So hopefully next year we can set up an own breeding. we going to plant more than 50-80 Aristolochia plants to see. And plan is harvest many eggs so that everybody on actias can breed this beautiful species.
For questions just mail!

Hello everyone,
I have done many experiments with Argema Mittrei caterpillars. I have also breed three years and have developed a hand pair technique which handpairs the Argema Mittrei within 1-2 minutes). And i my whole experience none of 1000 caterpillars accepted Ligustrum as food. The do accept artificial diet. Some people on actias know where to obtain it or how to make some. I do not have this knowledge

The do best on Rhus species, Eucalyptes gunni, Sweetgum, Juglans and Schinus Molles you can have good result.( a german company sells this plant. http://www.floratoskana.de) . The author Rudolphe Lampe from the book Saturniidae of the World.
He is feeding the mittrei on Ligustrum. But take a good look at the pictures in this book. They leaves are not all Ligustrum. looks like rhus spp. I also thought yes!! But it was to good to be true.
For more info or questions contact me.
With kind regards jayant
