No, this should be FRAGMATOBIA FULIGINOSA, if I'm not mistaken!
Why you said Phragmatobia fuliginosa? How have you identified it?
And why it doesn't eat taraxacum but it accept Rumex acetosa?
Help me with this larvae!
It ate only Rumex acetosa on Saturday, but didn't eat yesterday and today same.
It only search to escape from the rearing container...

But the problem now it's why it doesn't eat, and not what species is it

Hi Lorenzo.
1) the larvae of PHRAGMATOBIA FULIGINOSA can vary considerably in appearance, and can be very, very similar to L. spilosoma. Look at this picture: [Blockierte Grafik: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3279/2860907088_6e84bdc953.jpg?v=0]
2) Although both species feed on various herbes, that does not mean that they will eat the herbs you have found as their hostplants in a book. If your larva prefers rumex, then feed it with rumex.
3) You do not have to worry if the larva doesn´t eat: If it is L. spilosoma, it will pupate very soon, since spilosoma overwinters in a pupa.
If it is Ph. fuliginosa, you don't have to worry eiter, since fuliginosa finishes eating in autumn and then overwinters as a larva. It will then pupate in spring.
4) Put the larva in a bucket or box and place it somewhere in your garden. Put some plants like rumex in the bucket, but also some torn sheets of paper towel/ toilet paper. Then your larva can decide by itself, whether it wants to eat, search a hiding place for winter or pupate......
Best wishes for you and the little caterpillar!
Your questions are not clear, actually you don't write an understandable question but only get us a few words, express yourself more clearly.
Sorry I'm italian and my english is too bad
Thanks to all.
It doesn't eat since yesterday: maybe it spins a cocoon in the ground? I never tried to breed an Arctiidae species, I'm really a beginner. It ate Rumex on Saturday afternoon and since that moment it doesn't eat anymore. I can't find any sign that the metamorphosis will come soon.
Lorenzo, were you able to understand what I wrote?
If you did not understand what I wrote above, I will explain it again using simpler words.
The larvae of Phragmatobia fuliginosa stop eating plants in autumn and they overwinter as a larva. They do not turn into a puppa/cocoon until spring!! They hide as a larva in winter, and when spring comes they don't eat anything anymore but start to pupate.
If you do not understand my English, I can try to write in classical Latin.
Latine loquor amice
OK, so I shouldn't worry.
This morning it have eaten Rumex again, so I think is going to overwinter as a larva because it eats only enough to survive.
That is good. I hope that you will have success with the larva!
When the larva pupates in spring and finally becomes a moth, please let us know what Arctiida it is.
Thank you
If I succed in breeding the larvae, I will tell you what species is that of course.
