Butterflies on Madeira ?

    Hello ,

Does Thymelicus christi and Cyclyrius webbanius occur on the Island of Madeira ?
I found in some litterature that they occur also on Madeira, though I'm doubting it ?

Anybody can help me with that question?

    Thanks

    David

Madeira is an island far away from the continents. It has a distinct habitat from the one in mainland Europe or Africa.
So you find mainly butterflies that survived to a long distance migration or descendants of eggs, caterpillars, pupae or cocoons that were transported somehow sometimes to the island.
When adapting to their new habitat, species usually develop some skills or characteristics that distinguish them from their European or African relatives.

Madeira bird watcher Peter Wirtz says, that in a total there are only 20 butterflies’ species regularly recorded to Madeira.
4 are endemic species and 2 endemic subspecies to Madeira Islands.
You often find Danaus plexippus blown from Florida.

And don't forget to visit the Museo Municipal do Funchal. There are the Entomologists of the Islands.
