I never heard something about breeding Samia cynthia on Vinca species, but you can breed them very well on ligustrum.
Ligustrum plants in our country destroyed by the cold.
Seeking a replacement for food.

Hi LubosV!
Since 2 weeks a feed Bunaea alcinoe on Ligustrum. With us, it is very cold, too. The leaves are a little bit soft, but it works very well.
Greetings, Hans
In my home Ligustrum leaves are completely brown and dry. ![]()
I don't have any experience with breeding Samia cynthia on Eucalyptus gunnii, but it seems to be that that's also possible...
Hello Lubos,
two years ago i breed them on Prunus laurocerasus. Its green whole winter long. Hope you find some.
Regards and have a nice new Year.

Hi,
I think Eucalyptus gunnii could be tried but of course it shouldn't be used to feed species like Samia cynthia if you have Prunus laurocerasus or Ligustrum available.

However, I had some problems last years with Prunus laurocerasus and Samia ricini, so I had to switch to Ligustrum. I don't know what was happened, but I only saw the larvae dieing with apparently no reason. Click here to see an old thread opened by me last year on this argument.

Yes, I'm breeding this species too with Ligustrum and they're growing fast and well.
Of course I think Ligustrum is the best foodplant for Samia cynthia.
I breed my Samia cynthia on ligustrum without any problem. In L4 I put in some Prunus laurocerasus (easier to obtain for me), and some of the larvae started to die. I left the Prunus out then, and fed them on Ligustrum exclusively again, and no more larvae died...

I think so or it's just somebody who's trying to find out which species you can feed Samia cynthia and LubosV doesn't have any other species available so he just can try it, can't he?
Greetings wessel herrewijnen
Yes he can of course
