those caterpillars are 5th instar and just before they pupate they turn green and shrink like that one.

Right! To turn into a healthy butterfly the caterpillar has to hang down to pupate (you can find many pictures in the web). For that purpose it makes a kind of patch out of silk. If it is disturped, the chrysalis can‘t be formed correctly and the animal will die.

you said some caterpillars turned into green also in the last weeks. What did you do with them? Did you find some pupaes?

The caterpillar on the first picture will walk around a little bit, then make a silkpad, then it will hang down and become after some days a pupae.

I would say 5 cm or more is normal!

I never tried handpairing with this species- for natural pairing you need big cages and temperature + sunlight!
