Brahmea hearseyi Paarung

    • New

    David

I don't know if this helps, but I had pairings of Brahmaea hearseyi last winter. My observation is they have no issue at all with cooler temperatures (mine mated then it was 17C, being conservative with the indoor heating). Does that mean they need cooler temperatures? I don't know - probably not honestly - but they definitely don't need to be warm either. This species is listed as being from the highlands, so I imagine mountain nights are cooler and they are possibly adapted to it. Food for thought! This May has been unusually hot, with temperatures of 32C or more. Personally, given these previous observations, I'd move them into a cool spot instead. Perhaps they feel more comfortable there? Just a suggestion, I do not know for sure if it will help, but these are the conditions that worked for me.

Ok thank you. So far I didn't observe any pairings. Yesterday they were outside because it was warm. I did not see a pairing. How long does a pairing last. Would I see it in the morning?

In most cases yes, they stay attached until the morning.

I have bred B.hearseyi over a few generations during the summer. Heat wasn't an issue.

What worked well is putting two males per female in a medium cage (some males just never seem interested in pairing, so two males raises the chances) and then place a fan on the lowest setting a few metres away from the flight cage. This way I managed to pair almost all of the females. Males that pair once get "re-used" with other females. Fertility seems to be the same even when a male has mated once before.

Last night I saw a pairing. In the middle of the night I woke up and checked and they were still together. I don't know how much later it was. In the morning they were already apart from each other. Tonight I will see if the female starts laying eggs. I think there is a way to see if they are fertilized. Thank you all for helping me.

    Best regards,

    David
