Hi Actias!
Ive caught females of Colias croceus, how can I make them lay eggs?
Thanks in advance,
Thomas

Put them in a cage, place it in a sunny spot, feed them every day, and get some of the host plants (Lotus, Viciae or Hippocrepis seems good, but any Fabaceae should work). Place them so that they have as much contact to it as possible (without hindering them to fly). Should do the trick.

Hi, thank you very much for the info. Do you think a circular netting box would work?

Place in a cage with cut flowers ( buddleia) and a huge clump of birds foot trefoil ( lotus corniculatus) . Leave in sunshine and eggs will soon appear . I did this method a month ago and got plenty of eggs

Thank you

I don’t have access to buddleia, cant I just put other flowers, like clover?

Probably, depends on the size. With a diameter of 40cm and upwards it should be fine.

You can but I personally wouldn't recommend feeding butterflies with flowers in captivity in any case. In nature they have to visit a lot of flowers to get enough nectar and you simply can't reproduce that. I always feed them with honey or sugar water (saccharose works, fructose, or glucose is maybe better). Put a drop of that on some cardboard, place them in front of it, pull the proboscis with a small needle out and make it contact the drop. You may need to hold the butterfly between two fingers for that, as long as it hasn't started feeding yet. If you are quick enough sometimes it works without that but often times they will start to franticly walk around.
