Saturnia pavonia

It depends on locality and temperature. Here (Sicily)
I found them (Saturnia pavoniella) starting from end of february-beginning of March. I have currently eggs from females paired with wild males.

I don't totally agree with Rolf, I have seen males flying around at 11:00 am already. But normally females emerge
in the afternoon. And yes, if you are lucky you will find females in the afternoon hiding in the vegatation.
Only twice I found females this way, after I spotted males that were flying circles around a heather bush.

In the case of the warmer time from the first half of April until the middle of a May, in colder time April 2.half until the 2. half of a May.
but if the cold and warm time alternate, the pupaes they may lie onto a next year!!
but the males hatch before generally.
