Good or bad years for breeding

:confused: Why do we seem to have good years and bad years for breeding, most of the people i have spoken to this year including

myself have had a shocker in 2011, i tried to rear species that i normaly have no problems with , i had disaster after

disaster but why ? i used the same old trusted ways and methods as i have for years , but not in 2011 i had viral

disease on all my Rothschildia species but this time yes, you name it my livestock caught it , but again why ? every

cage and bit of equipment was sterile and the stock good , so come on fellas lets have the answer.

Breeding butterflies can be very rewarding, but losses are common and often extremely frustrating!
Here is my answer: 'shit happens'.

I am not sure whether such a thing like "good/ bad years" really exists.
There must be a reason to the losses that has not been discovered yet.

We as laymen may often do not have the equipment and knowledge to discover the reasons behind breeding failures, but I am sure there are explanations to all losses. Viral infections, bacteria and fungi maybe hard to determine, but a lot can be told from the way behaved and their state when they died.

very interesting,
I thought " only me...". I had a wonderful breeding of Rothschildia jorulla lichtenba - I thought so. I got two dozen perfect cocoons. However, when opening the cocoons later, no pupae, only dead larvae!! never before I had such a result!
My attempt of an explanation:
A man has, so is said, five senses: looking, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting. However, our world is very much colourful! We are unable to registrate germs, bacteria, virus and other deceases. And we all know, some moths are many years long very rare, and sometime, suddenly, they are heavy harmful, I think for instance to Lymantria dispar, Lymantria monacha, ... Why???
My methode: "Yes, o.k., it is so. Let's have a new attempt".
Sorry, it is not really helpful, I know.
But my idea only.

wir haben bei Zuchten nicht nur die Bekannten Feinde Viren, Bakterien und Pilze es sind auch Milben z.B. Raubmilben die kaum zu sehen sind und trotzdem selbst starke und gesunde Tiere töten können, wenn sie wie in manchen Jahren sehr häufig vorkommen.
You have not only bacteria, virus and fungi. Outside this you have for example the mite (acari) witch may come in someyears as the Lymantria dispar in a lot.
