Problems breeding Papilios and others

  • I have had some troubles with breeding. Problems are mainly with Papilio genus, but sometimes have happened with Saturniidae and some Danaide.

The caterpillars stop feeding, dejections become more fluid that usually and some areas become black. Finally the Caterpillar dies. Once it happen it is quite difficult to cut off the disease and all the stock dies. Main problems become just before molting. Sometimes the caterpillar seems to be healthy and it dies waiting to molt or before pupate.
Any idea about the disease? How can I avoid it? It have happened even with new stock in all new containers, and with (theoretically) material free of contamination.

  • Hi Federico

you describe common problems in papilio breedings. Tipps to avoid it :

don´t Keep the larvae to crowded together. small Groups work much better. the cats need space. if they always get in touch with each other, they get stresses and are more likely to infect each other once once is ill.

take care for good air circulation to avoid mold due to high humidity.

always use healthy hostplants. if they were grown in the greenhouse and are more light green than normal, the dont have many nutritions and the cats suffer from it.

You can never be sure if it is a fungus, bacterial or virus infection.

You can post some more Facts, like the species you try to raise, the hostplants, the conditions and so on.

    best regards
