Charaxes pupae death

    Hi,

I received 10 Charaxes pupae a few days ago. One by one, they would turn a dark color, like before hatching. Even the patterns on their wings showed up. Then, they would turn a pale white color. And I assume they are dead. Every single Charaxes turned out like this. Their were all different species of Charaxes. It is such a waste.

    Can anyone explain this?

    Thank you.

Experienced almost the same, but in my case 2 hatched, a third one was too crippled to be able to live. The other pupae died off.

I think it might be that Charaxes don't travel well, especially to other continents by plane. Some species are just more sensitive than others..

I think so because other species from the same supplier seem to have a pretty good hatching rate (talked to others about this).

Usually though bigger suppliers will often agree to send you a replacement/refund for the pupae , especially if you paid for 1 day express shipping and are polite!

I usually offer to pay the shipping costs for the replacement.

    Hi,

Your lucky to even get 3 . I’ve been waiting on them for a year and a half. I guess they probably do not travel well but all the chrysalis arrived alive. They just slowly started to die off.

    Thank you for your response!

thats normal with pupaes shipped arround the world. Had last week a shipment with Heliconides and 90% died or could not leave the pupae and yesterday I got another shipment and had today already 100% of all the emerged Heliconides in perfect condition..... you need to be lucky but most times I had bad luck

    regards

    Robert

How should they become weak on a plane? Maybe too dry, pupae not i a cabine but in freigt room, also hours of shaking. However, I also received Charaxes antiope no problem. Thus, in the post office or car, the situation might be different.
