hello!
I have a lot of antherina suraka caterpillars, and some have started making a cocoon. But i have noticed some don't make a cocoon at all, or make half. Am i doing something wrong? Can someone help me figure it out?
Kind regards!

Hi Cheyenne. I note that you say you have lots. Are the non pupating caterpillars disturbing the pupating ones?
Best wishes
Prem
Hi Prem!
I don't think they are disturbing them, not that i have seen.
But maybe i may be disturbing them when i try to switch the food? Is that possible?
I am also very confused to why they don't make a cocoon as most that have started do really well.
Can you show us some photos about the breeding situation?
It is a well-known phenomenon with breeding strains of suraka that some don’t make a cocoon at all. Separate them from the others as soon as they fall into the real prepupal rest and put them on a tissue or similar. Most of them will pupate without any flaws and the moths will hatch accordingly.
Thank you all so much for your help! I really thought i did something wrong, i have separated them from the rest.
Again thank you so much!
Some A. suraka will not build a cocoon before pupating and still pupate decently,
at least some of them, - when the prepupae/fresh pupae is taking care of, regarding that special circumstance.
I also think though that the adults of these caterpillars/pupae should not be included with/in breeding or selling eggs no matter if they look well or not.
It is an obvious flaw and a sign of an unhealthy strain in my opinion and most of them will not emerge properly or produce healthy offspring.
The last years it was quite a problem to find a healthy strain where this does not happe,n and adults are healthy and eager to mate.
So i hope this will change soon and you will have many healthy adults either way
Hi IsaL,
Thank you for the info! what can i do best with the ones that didn't make a cocoon?
Most of them are doing fine and made a cocoon, so i'm very happy with that!
