your description points to an incorrect formation of the proboscis. Normally, the two parts of it are instantly combined after emerging of the moths. In your case, the consumption of liquids by the moths is impossible!

Friedrich mentions that nerii pairs at about 24 degrees Celsius in the second or third night after hatching, and that it is not always necessary to feed them although it might help. In general he recommends large cages they can fly in. Manual feeding turns out annoying almost every time, so I use real flowers that I put into the cage and fill them with sugarwater or diluted honey. A little air movement aka wind can help distributing pheromenes, too.
