Gonimbrasia tyrrhea

Hi, I have for the first time bred ex wild collected Gonimbrasia tyrrhea. Now larvae are in L4 and they are growing very well on Schinus terebinthifolius.

I am keeping them indoors in a large netting cage and a rearing temperature of around 20 degrees celcius.

I know that these will pupate underground, and my question is, what substrate shall I use, please?

How deep will they dig before settling in to pupate?

Is it advisable to remove the pupa when formed or leave them untouched?

Hello Aldo,

I use a 50/50 mixture of sand and garden soil, mois but not wet. I fill it into 2 L Tetra packs (height 2/3) from beverages, for example ice tea, one for each caterpillar. Drilling some holes in the substrate makes it easier to dig in. I close the container with tape and empty it after two weeks, harvesting the pupae.

I have over 100 larvae so I need something more communal.

I will also make some seperate as this is better because larvae will not disturb each other.

Hi Aldo,

This year I had some saturnidae of Africa (petiveri, alcinoe, phaedusa christyi, Holocerina ...) and didn't have any problem to get pupaes. I took a large box and the earth It collected directly in the forest with a depth in the box between 10 and 15 cm. I didn't have any loss. After 2,3 weeks I collected the pupaes to have a better control when hatching.

I think I will use this method, as I have many and cannot place them individually.
