At the moment I am breeding Smerinthus caecus. The larvae have only just reached the 4th instar. I noticed that they have an exceptionally large head and horn, comparable with the size of a full-grown Smerinthus ocellata larva. Has anyone ever recorded 4 instead of 5 larval instars in Smerinthus caecus, or in other species of the genus Smerinthus?
