coscinocera hercules: Warning with ailanthus

Hello, I wanted to bring you a testimony of a breeding that I failed on ailanthus. that was years ago, but on inquiring I heard that the plant would be poisonous in high doses.

- The breeding was great from L1 to L5, then at L6 it became a nightmare: the caterpillars died one after the other.

If you have any information I am interested.

i breed these on Ligustrum ovalifolium bevore some years with no problems.

Hi Paul,

we have had many rearings of Attacus and Samia on Ailanthus so far without any rearing problems. Coscinocera was reared on Populus sp. without problems if kept warm and under high humidity in the shower (100% survival).

Many plants are somehow poisonous or become poisonous when attacked by insects. Prunus laurocerasus and other Prunus sp. are suitable foodplants but poisonous to varying degree. Some larvae need this host to protect themselfes, other not survive. I assume that you have had other problems with your Coscinocera, but not due to the foodplant. However, thanks for the "warning" and everybody should keep an eye on this matter and may report observations.

I recently had access to Ligustrum, which was not the case before, so I used ailante.

Ps, If anyone know of a supplier, I would love to buy some eggs to try again.
