I put 5 newly emerged larvae of Argema mittrei onto Sweetgum (Liquidamber) last evening and as of this morning have not started feeding. Room temperature is 75 degrees fahrenheit. Does anybody have advice on getting these to accept this foodplant? Will they accept Staghorn Sumac freely? I am unable to use Poison Ivy as I am severely allergic to it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hello Johann,
Gut Danke! Excellente.....I will try this as soon as I get home.

I did only successful breeding with Cotinus coggygria in summer. Liquidambar is well taken as host but later in L4/5 it always failed and they died.

hello Andre
No I succesfully reared them on Sweetgum!! No losses! The key:
Low humidity, low temp. 17-23 celcius
Humidity 45-53 %
Succes guaranteed

Many Thanks for all the excellent advice friends! I’ve misted the hatchlings and they started feeding almost immediately!

Hi Friends! I have the best results on Liquidamber too. None of 100 caterpillars I had during the years eat Eukalyptus or Cotinus or Schinus or Rhus. So Jay got the clou and I follow his Example with good results now.
Thank you Jay!🌈🍀🙏🙏
