Plants for butterlies and moths

Giacomoaksnes

Hello guys,

I'm asking you some advices about which species i can plant in my garden ( Northern Appennines, italy) in order to attract some moths!

Which are the best plants?

I have some seeds of Phlox, Datura, Brugmansia, Ipomea and Convolvulus, Solanum dulcamara and some plants of Ligustrum ovalifolium and Ligustrum vulgare, Buddleja, Viburnum opulus, Liliac and bird cherry.

i was thinking about Fuchisa

Mirabilis jalapa would also be a good option. Nightblooming scented flowers which appear from spring to winter.

Brunschi

Mirabilis jalapa and Saponaria officinalis are very attractiv for many Sphingidae.

Papilion 65

Lavendula works also very well for little moths

sphingidae

Hello Giacomo,

Centanthus ruber, C.ruber alba and Echium vulgare and Echium plantagineum are very attractiv for many Sphingidae and special for Hemaris.

These plants have a very long flowering period from beginning of may to the end of october.

I personally dislike planting all these non-native plants like Fuchsia, Mirabilis or even Buddleja and Phlox. Some good ones for Sphingidae were named already like Echium vulgare, Saponaria spp. I would add Lonicera periclymenum. For smaller moths like some species of Noctuidae Silene spp. works really well, but Saponaria and other Caryophyllaceae as well. Also Lavandula as mentioned by Eric. For a lot of species that emerge in spring willow and poplar catkins are great, plus they are a host plant for lots of moth and butterfly larvae.
