Goimbrasia zambesina refusing foodplants.

Hello, my Gonimbrasia zambesina hatched 4 days ago. It's incredible but larvae still didn't eat anything and yesterday some started to die. I offered Eucalyptus (cut in stripes), Oleander (cut in stripes), very tender leaves of Citrus, young leaves of Schinus terebinthifolius, Ficus (used in the past successfully with Gonimbrasia belina) and Rahmnus.

In the past I reared this species easily on Nerium oleander.

    Hi Mario,

I have also problems with them. The cats started with Citrus and moved than to ervery green oak. I hope that will work. Prunus laurocerasus dosen't work.

    Regards, Eric

    Mario,

Eucalyptus gunni should work! Just put them only with this into a small box and put them at a dark place.

Otherwise you live in Italie and perhaps you have Quercus ilex near to your place ?!

Oak and Beech is also suitable for them.

    good luck

    André

In my garden I have a small eucalyptus gunnii and a Quercus ilex. Among Eucalyptus, I had tried E. camaldulensis. Unfortunately seems to late to save them trying these other plants, only 2 larvae alive left. Will try again in future.

I had the same problem, all of the larvae have died now. They refused Prunus laureocerasus, but also Oleander, Ligustrum, Rubus, Rosa, Eucalyptus and Salix ( still green!) Also tried Cotoneaster , Choisya and Citrus.

The same problem occurred with Actias rhodopneuma.

I sincerely hope that others will have more luck,

    Paul

I experienced a similar problem with my Gonimbrasia zambesina caterpillars. It was particularly frustrating because one hundred percent of my zambesina eggs hatched.

The newly-hatched larvae refused everything I offered them except for Arbutus unedo (an evergreen shrub commonly known as Strawberry Tree). The hatchlings initially grew well on the Arbutus unedo and I thought I had found a winter host plant that would work. But then the larvae stalled in first instar, never moulted, and one by one began dying. Frustrating.
